in
1951, Father Bernard Davies a Mill Hill Missionary started secondary
classes at Karamunsing to prepare students for Senior Cambridge
Examinations. Soon after the Catholic Mission secred a 7.653 acre
site at Tanjung Aru where the new secondary school was built. It
was occupied in 1953. The school was named Sacred Heart Secondary
School. In 1958, three La Salle Brothers came to Jesselton (now
Kota Kinabalu) to assume management of Sacred Heart Primary and
Secondary Schools. Brother Raphael Egan became the first La Salle
Brother Principal succeeding Father Arthur Crowther. 15th May 1958
was an auspicious day for the school because on that day the name
of the school was changed to La Salle Secondary School after the
Founder of the Brothers, St. John Baptist De La Salle.
Brother
Brendan Dunne became Principal of La Salle in 1966 taking over from
Brother Raphael. This, too, was the year that the three storeyed
"New Community House" was built for the Brothers. In December
1969, Brother Brendan Dunne, handed over principalship to Brother
Charles O'Leary who began his seventeen year service as a dedicated
and progressive principal. Brother Charles was succeeded by Brother
Justin Mobilik as assistant principal in 1986 and then by Mr. Stanley
Liew in 1987. The present principal is now Dr. Edward Miku Tiongsu.
Apart from being fine administrators, they have carried on the torch
to make La Salle 'something more'.
In
1983, La Salle celebrated the silver jubilee of the arrival of the
brothers and this too marked the 80th year of the foundation of
the school.

In
1991, a small hostel was opened by the La Salle Brothers in a temporary
location. The project is to help students from surrounding more
remote localities.
Nabawan
itself is rather remote - 195 kilometers from Kota Kinabalu, the
capital of Sabah. About 90% of the population of Nabawan district
is Murut. Due to the lack of infrastructure and its remoteness,
it can be considered an underpriviledged area. There is only one
secondary school in the district at present.
However, the construction of the
extension of the school (SMK Nabawan 2, approximately 10 kilometers
from the present SMK Nabawan) is on progress. It is expected to
be fully operated some time this year (2003).
The
hostel has been successful over the past 10 years and now with the
acquisition of a suitable site of 2 acres, a new hostel was erected
and completed. Apart from the provision of dormitories, dining room
and kitchen, it also includes an office, study rooms, audio-visual
room. library, chapel, computer room, indoor recreation room, toilet
and bathroom, a workshop and staff quarters.
