Benildus House at Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu was built by the Penang District in 1986 as a formation house for students of La Salle Brothers Sabah. It was blessed and declared open by Bishop John Lee on 22nd December 1986. It served as a scholasticate for only a few years.

In March 1990, it became a hostel for school and college going students mostly from outstation, attending S. M. La Salle. It provides boarding and lodging facilities and a congenial place to study for some 30 students at a low cost as compared to prevailing rates in the city area. It caters for students from Form 3 to Form 6.

It has served its purpose well in its 12 years of existence. Some 400 students have passed through its portals. They have found its quiet atmosphere, comfortable sleeping and study accomodation, home cooked, cheap and nourishing food and a caring supervision ideal for their needs.

Many of the past students have graduated both from local and foreign universities and have now joined the Sabah and National workforce, contributing to the nation's economy and well being.

Most who have stayed at Benildus House find it a home away from home and are proud to be called Benildians. They keep in contact with each other and the place, often staying and visiting when they are around.

The services provided by the place for the community has not been much advertised. 'Good wine needs no bush' - The Benildians, past and present, are the advertisers. Other than providing board and accomodation, Benildus House is a centre for moral and spiritual formation. The Benildians are trained to be self-reliant, to be responsible under guidance for their own physical, spiritual and moral development.

Benildus Boarding Hostel is a non-profit making venture, with overheads kept to the minimum. However, while the hostel fees cover the day to day expenditure, these fees are not at all able to meet expenditures for major repairs, maintenance, extension, furniture and equipment replacements.

The Benildus House has just recently completed its extension and repairs. Any contribution in cash or in kind would be acknowledged and appreciated towards repair and enhancement of the place and to provide better amenities.
