(La Salle – Brothers Malaya & Singapore 1852 – 1952) by Francis Brown. Lasallian Publication Petaling Jaya 1997.From France, the Brothers spreads in 81 countries and now there are about 7,000 Brothers. They have hundreds of educational centres educating more than 800,000 students throughout the world.

In March 1852, a majestic sailing ship completed its 3-month voyage and entered Singapore's busy harbour. Six Brothers came ashore to take charge of St. Joseph's Institution, Singapore and in Penang the very same month, St. Xavier's Institution.

In January 1958, Brother Charles O'Leary together with Brother Thomas Carney and Brother Raphael Egan arrived in North Borneo (now Sabah) to take over the administration of Sacred Heart Secondary School from the Mill Hill Fathers, who had been running the school since 1903. Later the school was renamed "La Salle" after the saintly founder, St. John Baptist De La Salle.

The Brothers took over the administration of St.Mary’s Secondary School Sandakan and St.Mary’s Primary School Mile 2.5 Labuk Road, Sandakan in January 1963

On August 1976, the administration of St. Martin's School was handed over to the La Salle Brothers by Father Henselmans, a Mill Hill Missionary.

Benildus House, a students hostel in Tanjung Aru was opened in January 1990. Later in March 1991 another students hostel, Asrama Butitin Nabawan was opened.
